Rotonium is expanding its PIC design team to increase throughput and support more complex integrated photonic architectures. For this reason, Rotonium is looking for a highly skilled PIC Design Engineer (Mid/Senior) for a full-time position based in Padova (hybrid, remote possible).
Key Responsibilities
• Design and optimization of integrated photonic components.
• EM and circuit-level simulations using industry-standard tools.
• Layout, mask design, and photonic routing.
• Full tape-out preparation: documentation, DRC checks, mask review.
• Technical interface with foundries and collaboration with partners.
• Contribution to improving internal design libraries, flows, and methodologies.
Must-have
• ≥3 years hands-on PIC design and ≥1 tape-out.
• University Master’s degree or PhD in Physics, Optical Engineering, Photonics, or a related field or equivalent experience.
• Ability to design photonic building blocks from first principles and improve existing ones.
• Proven autonomy in managing a tape-out workflow end-to-end.
• Strong proficiency with:
- Lumerical (FDTD / EME / INTERCONNECT).
- Klayout.
- GDS-based photonic design workflows.
• Experience with Python-based parametric PIC design frameworks and layout automation tools.
• Professional working proficiency in English.
Nice-to-have
• Hands-on experience with optical/electrical characterization, including optical testing, fiber–waveguide coupling, and design/performance verification of PIC components.
• Familiarity with thin-film Lithium Niobate or heterogeneous integration platforms.
• Familiarity with optical manufacturing processes.
• Knowledge of Python for data analysis and measurements automation.
• Knowledge of quantum photonics, including concepts relevant to integrated quantum optics and quantum computing architectures.
