Congratulations to Matteo Sanna and the team led by Lorenzo Pavesi at the University of Trento for their recent publication in npj Quantum Information:
Kudos also to Alessio Baldazzi, Massimo Borghi, and Stefano Azzini for this outstanding piece of Italian quantum research.
This work marks a significant milestone:
✅ execution of variational quantum algorithms on a photonic integrated circuit,
✅ operating at room temperature,
✅ with on-chip entangled photon pair sources,
✅ using entangled ququarts to run a VQE (for H₂) and variational factorization.
A concrete step towards practical, scalable photonic quantum computing — no cryogenics required.
📌 We are especially proud to share this result because Matteo Sanna is now part of the Rotonium team, where we continue developing a sustainable and scalable vision for photonic quantum computing.
🎓 This research was conducted during his PhD at the University of Trento and is a brilliant example of how academic innovation can fuel deep tech entrepreneurship.
