Quantum Experimental Scientist

Rotonium is expanding its quantum experimental team to advance the development and validation of on-chip photonic quantum technologies. For this reason, Rotonium is looking for a highly skilled Quantum Experimental Scientist (Mid/Senior) for a full-time position based in Padova (hybrid).

The ideal candidate has strong hands-on experience with optical laboratory measurements, integrated photonics characterization, and free-space optical setups, and is motivated to work in a fast-paced environment at the intersection of quantum optics and photonic engineering.

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform optical laboratory measurements for the characterization of integrated photonic circuits and quantum photonic devices.

  • Set up and operate free-space optical experiments (beam splitters, mirrors, filters, polarization optics, etc.)

  • Perform fiber–chip coupling and alignment for on-chip characterization.

  • Use tunable lasers, detectors, and instrumentation for linear and nonlinear photonic measurements.

  • Develop automated measurement routines and data processing pipelines using Python.

  • Analyze datasets to extract device performance metrics and validate integrated photonic functionalities.

  • Collaborate closely with the PIC design, theory, and electronics teams to define experiments and interpret results.

  • Contribute to improving internal laboratory workflows, documentation, and measurement infrastructure.

Must-have

  • ≥3 years of hands-on experience in optical laboratory measurements or experimental quantum optics.

  • University Master’s degree or PhD in Physics, Photonics, Optical Engineering, Quantum Technologies, or a related field (or equivalent experience).

  • Strong experience with:

    • Free-space optical components (beam splitters, mirrors, filters, waveplates).

    • Fiber alignment, chip coupling, and integrated photonics characterization.

    • Tunable lasers, detectors, power meters, and optical instrumentation.

    • Proven ability to design, execute, and troubleshoot complex optical setups.

    • Strong Python skills for data analysis, automation of measurements, and visualization.

    • Ability to work autonomously in the lab and manage experiments end-to-end.

    • Professional working proficiency in English.

Nice-to-have

  • Experience with quantum or nonlinear optical measurements (e.g., photon correlations, SPDC, SFWM, squeezing, interferometric measurements).

  • Familiarity with quantum photonics concepts relevant to integrated implementations.

  • Experience with integrated photonics platforms (SiN, SOI, TFLN).

  • Knowledge of electronics for experiment control and synchronization.

What We Offer

  • Full-time permanent position.

  • Hybrid working mode.

  • A role with direct impact on Rotonium’s quantum photonic roadmap and experimental validation workflows.

  • Fast-paced, collaborative environment working at the intersection of quantum optics and integrated photonics.
